'Acellular' means lacking cells. It's very similar to 'noncellular,' and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, 'acellular' sometimes implies that something *used* to have cells or is derived from cells, but no longer contains them. For example, acellular dermal matrices (used in surgery) are derived from skin but have had the cells removed. Think of it as a cell 'ghost.' It is distinct from something that was never cellular. It exists as part of the extracellular environment.
