An 'akaryote' is essentially a synonym for a prokaryote—an organism whose cells lack a nucleus and other complex organelles. Think bacteria! 🦠 It's a slightly less common term than 'prokaryote.' These organisms have their genetic material floating freely in the cytoplasm. They are generally simpler in structure than eukaryotic cells (cells with a nucleus). 'Akaryote' is sometimes used to emphasize the absence of a nucleus.
