Alma-Ata is the former name of Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan. It's like calling your best friend by their childhood nickname. It was the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997, when the capital moved to Astana (now Nur-Sultan). Alma-Ata is known for its beautiful location at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains. The name means "Father of Apples" in Kazakh. While no longer the capital, it remains a significant cultural and economic center.
