Definition
An "almoner" is someone who distributes alms, which are charitable donations, to the poor or needy. Historically, almoners were often associated with religious institutions or noble households. They played a crucial role in managing and allocating resources to those in need. Think of them as early social workers. Unlike modern charities, almoners often had a more direct, personal connection with the recipients of their aid. Today, the role is less common but the underlying concept remains: providing assistance to those less fortunate.
