Definition
Anglian refers to a group of Old English dialects spoken in the regions settled by the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes that migrated to Britain. Think of it as a family of dialects, like cousins who share similar traits but have their own quirks. These dialects were spoken in Northumbria and Mercia. Northumbria was a major cultural and intellectual center during the Anglo-Saxon period. Anglian dialects contributed to the development of English, though West Saxon eventually became the standard literary language. It is like the language of a cool older sibling.
