Annam was a French protectorate encompassing central Vietnam. Think of it as the 'middle child' of French Indochina, sandwiched between Tonkin (north) and Cochinchina (south). It existed from the late 19th century until 1949. The area had a complex history, influenced by Chinese and later French colonialism. Imagine a kingdom trying to hold onto its identity amidst powerful neighbors. Annam was like the meat in a cultural sandwich, not quite independent but not fully absorbed either.
