Definition
The azygos vein is a major vein in the chest that drains blood from the back and chest wall into the superior vena cava. It's positioned on the right side of the vertebral column. This vein provides an alternative pathway for blood to return to the heart if the inferior vena cava is blocked. Think of it as a backup route in the body's circulatory system. The azygos vein has connections to other veins such as the intercostal veins.
