Definition
"Barbary" historically referred to the coastal regions of North Africa, specifically what is now Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. It was a region known for its independent Berber kingdoms and corsairs (pirates). These pirates frequently raided European ships and coastal towns, capturing people for ransom or enslavement. The term "Barbary" evokes images of swashbuckling adventures and dangerous encounters. The area was a crossroads of cultures and trade, but also a source of conflict between Europe and North Africa. Think of it as the Caribbean of the Mediterranean in the 17th-19th centuries.
