Baycol is the brand name for cerivastatin, a drug formerly used to lower cholesterol levels. It belonged to the statin class of medications. Baycol worked by inhibiting an enzyme involved in cholesterol production. Think of it as a tool designed to reduce cholesterol, but that ultimately proved dangerous. Baycol was taken off the market due to serious side effects, particularly muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis). This case serves as a reminder of the importance of continuous drug monitoring and patient safety.
