Definition
A 'body snatcher' is someone who steals corpses from graves, usually for medical dissection. This was a particular problem in the 18th and 19th centuries. Medical schools needed bodies for anatomy lessons but had limited legal means of obtaining them. Body snatchers would exhume recently buried bodies and sell them to doctors. It was a lucrative but highly unethical and illegal activity. The practice led to increased security measures at cemeteries.
