Definition
A caiman is a crocodilian reptile belonging to the family Alligatoridae, found in Central and South America. They are closely related to alligators but are generally smaller and possess bony plates on their bellies. Caimans inhabit a variety of freshwater habitats, including swamps, rivers, and lakes. They feed on fish, crustaceans, and small vertebrates. Think of them as the 'smaller, armored' cousins of alligators. Their presence is a vital part of their ecosystems.
