Definition
A cangue is a heavy wooden collar or yoke that was used as a form of public punishment in China and other parts of East Asia. It was typically a large, rectangular board with a hole in the center for the neck. Once in place, the cangue restricted movement and caused considerable discomfort and shame. It was essentially a portable prison 😫. The weight and size of the cangue prevented the wearer from easily eating or drinking without assistance, increasing the humiliation. The cangue is a stark reminder of historical methods of public shaming.
