The Carnot cycle is a theoretical thermodynamic cycle. It describes the most efficient possible way to convert heat into work, or vice versa. The Carnot cycle consists of four reversible processes: isothermal expansion, adiabatic expansion, isothermal compression, and adiabatic compression. It's a standard of comparison for all other heat engines. The ideal efficiency is the highest any real engine can achieve. Understanding it helps engineers design more efficient engines.
