Definition
The chancel is the space around the altar in a Christian church, typically reserved for the clergy and choir. Imagine it as the 'VIP section' of the church. It's usually located at the eastern end of the church, near the sanctuary. The chancel is often separated from the nave (the main body of the church) by a screen or railing. It's a place of particular sanctity and importance. The design and decoration of the chancel often reflect the church's theological beliefs.
