Clawhammer, also called 'frailing,' is a distinctive style of banjo playing characterized by a downward striking motion of the hand. 🎶 The player uses their index or middle fingernail to strike the strings. Think of it as a percussive, rhythmic approach to banjo music. Unlike bluegrass banjo playing which uses fingerpicks, clawhammer uses the bare nail or fingertip. It's an old-time style rooted in Appalachian tradition.
