Definition
A contracture is a permanent shortening of muscles or tendons, leading to limited movement in a joint. Imagine a muscle that has become stiff and tight, making it difficult to straighten a limb. This can occur due to prolonged immobility, nerve damage, or muscle disorders. Unlike a temporary muscle cramp, a contracture is a lasting condition. It's like a rope that has been pulled too tight and can't be loosened. Physical therapy and surgery are often needed to treat contractures and restore range of motion.
