Definition
Counterglow, also known as gegenschein, is a faint, diffuse brightening of the night sky directly opposite the sun ☀️. It appears as a large, oval-shaped patch of light, subtly brighter than the surrounding sky. This phenomenon is caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust particles located along Earth's orbit. These particles act like tiny mirrors, reflecting sunlight back towards the Earth. It's best observed in very dark locations, away from city lights. It is a subtle but beautiful example of light scattering in space. Think of it as a faint echo of the sun's light in the night sky.
