A "cynodont" is any member of the *Cynodontia* group, a key link in mammal evolution. Cynodonts were therapsids that lived from the Late Permian to the Early Jurassic periods. They possessed advanced features like complex teeth, a secondary palate, and a more mammal-like jaw. These adaptations allowed for more efficient breathing and eating. Cynodonts are considered the direct ancestors of mammals. Their fossils provide vital clues about the transition from reptiles to mammals.
