"Dative bond" is simply another name for a coordinate bond. It emphasizes the *giving* or *donating* of the electron pair from one atom to the other. It is a type of covalent bond where one atom provides both of the shared electrons. Imagine one person paying for dinner for two people. 🍽️ One atom (the donor) provides both electrons for the bond, while the other atom (the acceptor) receives them. The bond formed is exactly the same as a covalent bond but the bookkeeping is different. Ammonia (NH₃) reacting with a proton (H⁺) to form ammonium (NH₄⁺) is a classic example.
