Decortication is the surgical removal of the outer layer of an organ or structure, often the pleura (lining of the lung). Imagine peeling the skin off an apple, but for an organ. 🍎 It's usually performed when the pleura becomes thickened or scarred due to infection or inflammation. This thickening restricts lung function and causes breathing difficulties. Removing the outer layer allows the lung to expand properly. It’s a relatively major procedure, aiming to restore normal lung function. This allows for improved breathing and overall respiratory health.
