Definition
Dermatobia is a genus of botflies, most notably including Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly. Unlike many botflies that lay eggs directly on the host, Dermatobia employs a clever strategy: it catches other insects, like mosquitoes or ticks, and glues its eggs to them. When the carrier insect lands on a warm-blooded host, the eggs hatch, and the larvae burrow into the skin. The larva then develops under the skin, causing a painful boil-like lesion. They are essentially hitchhikers of the insect world. They are like an unwanted souvenir from a tropical vacation.
