Definition
A diapsid is an amniote tetrapod that possesses two temporal fenestrae (openings) on each side of its skull. These openings lighten the skull and provide more space for jaw muscles, allowing for stronger bites. Diapsids include almost all reptiles (except turtles, whose classification is debated) and birds. This skull structure is considered more advanced than the anapsid skull. Diapsids have diversified into a wide range of forms, from lizards to dinosaurs.
