Definition
Diapsida is a major group of amniote tetrapods characterized by having two temporal fenestrae (openings) on each side of their skulls. This group includes almost all modern reptiles (except turtles, whose placement is debated) as well as birds. These openings provide more space for jaw muscles, allowing for a stronger bite. The diapsid skull is a key evolutionary innovation. Diapsida exhibits immense diversity in size, shape, and lifestyle.
