Definition
A distributary is a branch of a river that flows away from the main stream and does not rejoin it. They are typically found in river deltas, where the river slows down and deposits sediment. The Mississippi River Delta is a prime example with many distributaries. Unlike tributaries which flow into the main river, distributaries flow outward. They often create complex networks of channels and islands. Think of it as a river splitting into many smaller rivers, each finding its own path to the sea.
