Doppler shift is the change in frequency or wavelength of a wave due to the relative motion between the source and the observer. Itβs a direct consequence of the Doppler effect. Imagine a train π whistle; its pitch changes as the train passes. The shift can be either an increase in frequency (blueshift) or a decrease (redshift). Astronomers use Doppler shift to determine the velocity of stars and galaxies. Radar guns also utilize this principle to measure speed.
