A drydock is the same thing as a dry dock: a specialized dock that can be drained of water to allow inspection and repair work on a ship's hull. Ships enter the drydock when it is flooded; the water is then pumped out, leaving the vessel high and 'dry.' This permits access to the ship's underwater sections. Drydocks are essential for ship maintenance. It's like a massive operating room for seafaring vessels. The 'dry' condition is what makes the examination and work possible.
