Definition
Elastance is a measure of how stiff or resistant something is to being stretched or deformed; it's the opposite of elasticity. A material with high elastance requires a lot of force to change its shape. Think of it as the opposite of a rubber band; a brick has high elastance, while a rubber band has low elastance and high elasticity. In biological systems, elastance is particularly relevant to the lungs, measuring their resistance to inflation. A high elastance means the lungs are stiff and difficult to inflate, which can be a sign of disease. The inverse of elastance is compliance, which measures how easily something stretches.
