Definition
Ephemeroptera is an order of insects commonly known as mayflies. These delicate insects are characterized by their short adult lifespan, sometimes only a few hours. Mayflies have aquatic nymphs (juvenile stage) that can live for months or even years. The adults emerge, reproduce, and die quickly. They are important indicators of water quality. Think of them as the butterflies of the aquatic world, but with a much shorter highlight reel.
