Definition
Fasciola is a genus of liver flukes, parasitic flatworms that infect the liver and bile ducts of mammals, including humans and livestock. The most well-known species is Fasciola hepatica, the common liver fluke. These parasites cause a disease called fascioliasis, which can lead to liver damage, inflammation, and abdominal pain. Infections are typically acquired through consumption of contaminated water or plants. Think of them as unwanted squatters taking up residence in your liver! π‘
