Definition
Faucial tonsils are another name for the palatine tonsils, located on either side of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat). They are masses of lymphatic tissue and part of the immune system. They defend against inhaled or ingested pathogens. Faucial tonsils are visible when you open your mouth wide. These tonsils can become infected, leading to inflammation and sore throat, commonly known as tonsillitis. Like the palatine tonsils, theyโre the most well-known and often just referred to as โtonsilsโ.
