Definition
Fetal membranes are the structures that surround and protect a developing fetus during pregnancy. These membranes, primarily the amnion and chorion, create a protective sac filled with amniotic fluid. This sac cushions the fetus, maintains a stable temperature, and allows for movement. 🤰 These membranes also act as a barrier against infection. The fetal membranes eventually rupture, signaling the start of labor. Think of them as a natural water balloon safeguarding the baby!
