Definition
Genus Cuterebra encompasses a specific group of botflies whose larvae are parasitic in rodents, rabbits, and occasionally other mammals. These flies deposit their eggs near the nests or runways of their hosts. The larvae then burrow into the host's skin, forming a warble or cyst. Inside the cyst, the larva feeds and develops, causing discomfort and potential secondary infections. Though not usually fatal, these infestations are a nuisance for both wild animals and, sometimes, domestic pets. Think of them as unwanted lodgers setting up shop under the skin's surface.
