The *genus Sassafras* includes deciduous trees known for their aromatic bark and leaves. The most well-known species is *Sassafras albidum*, native to eastern North America. These trees have unique mitten-shaped leaves and produce small, bluish-black fruits. Historically, sassafras was used for medicinal purposes and as a flavoring agent. However, safrole, a component of sassafras oil, has been found to be carcinogenic. Consequently, its use in food and medicine is now restricted. *Genus Sassafras* trees add vibrant color to forests in the fall.
