Definition
Gregorian modes are a set of eight scales used in Gregorian chant, the traditional music of the Roman Catholic Church. Each mode has a distinct melodic character, based on its unique arrangement of whole and half steps. They are less focused on chord progressions than modern scales, instead prioritizing melody. Think of them as ancient musical dialects. Gregorian modes evoke a sense of serenity and spirituality. They are like exploring a peaceful, historic soundscape.
