Definition
A haemosporidian is a single-celled parasitic organism that lives in the blood of its host. These parasites belong to the group Haemosporidia, within the phylum Apicomplexa. They typically require two hosts to complete their life cycle, often a vertebrate and an invertebrate like a mosquito. Their presence in the blood can cause significant health issues, ranging from mild symptoms to severe disease. Think of it as a tiny, unwelcome tenant taking up residence in your bloodstream. They multiply within blood cells and can cause a variety of symptoms.
