A halliard (sometimes spelled halyard) is a rope used on a sailboat to raise and lower the sails β΅. Think of it as the elevator cable for the fabric that catches the wind and propels the boat. It runs from the deck, up the mast, and back down to control the height of the sail. Unlike a sheet, which adjusts the sail's angle, the halliard focuses on vertical movement. A stuck halliard can really ruin a sailing day. Keep in mind how essential a simple rope can be.
