In geology, a hanging wall is the block of rock that lies above an inclined fault plane ๐ชจ. Think of a fault line as a crack in the Earth. The hanging wall literally hangs over the fault. If you were standing in a mine following a fault, it would be the rock above your head. It is important in understanding the types of stresses and movements that have shaped the Earth. The movement of the hanging wall relative to the footwall (the rock below) determines the type of fault.
