Definition
A horn is a permanent, typically curved or spiral, bony projection growing from the heads of various animals, especially ungulates (hoofed mammals). It consists of a core of bone covered by a sheath of keratin, the same material as your fingernails. Think of it like a bony finger sticking out of an animal's head. Unlike antlers, horns are not shed annually. They are used for defense, display, and sometimes digging or other activities. Rams, bulls, and goats are well-known for their horns.
