Definition
Incontinence most literally means the inability to control bodily functions, like urination or defecation. But, figuratively, it also describes a lack of self-restraint, especially regarding emotions or desires. Think of it as a loss of control over something that should be contained. Unlike freedom of expression, emotional incontinence involves inappropriate or excessive displays of feeling. It can apply to everything from laughter to anger to tears. This contrasts with repression, which is a complete blocking of such things.
