Definition
Instrumentalism is a philosophical viewpoint that ideas and theories are primarily tools for solving problems rather than accurate representations of reality. In other words, the value of a theory lies in its usefulness, not its truthfulness. If a theory helps you predict or control something, it's a good theory, regardless of whether it perfectly reflects reality. It prioritizes practicality over metaphysical accuracy. It is the opposite of believing that theories must perfectly mirror the world. Think of it like a map: it's useful if it gets you where you need to go, even if it's not a perfect replica of the terrain.
