John Duns Scotus (c. 1266–1308) was a Scottish philosopher and theologian during the medieval period. He was renowned for his intricate and subtle reasoning, earning him the nickname "Doctor Subtilis." His work covered metaphysics, logic, and theology. Scotus developed a unique philosophical system, distinct from that of Thomas Aquinas. He strongly defended the Immaculate Conception of Mary. He remains an important figure in the history of Western thought.
