"Josh Billings" was the pen name of Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818-1885), an American humorist and writer. He was known for his folksy wit and humorous aphorisms. Think of him as the Mark Twain of his time, but maybe a bit less famous. Billings used phonetic spellings and unconventional grammar for comedic effect. He provided social commentary through humor. His writings were popular in the 19th century.
