Gerard Kuiper (1905-1973) was a Dutch-American astronomer who made significant contributions to planetary science. He discovered two moons of Uranus (Miranda and Umbriel) and Neptune's moon Nereid. Kuiper also predicted the existence of the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune containing icy bodies. His work greatly expanded our understanding of the solar system's outer reaches. He also studied the atmospheres of planets. Heβs like the explorer who mapped the edge of the solar system. π
