Definition
Leiopelmatidae is a family of primitive frogs native to New Zealand. They represent one of the oldest frog lineages, retaining characteristics lost in more modern frog families. They're small, ground-dwelling frogs found in damp forests. Their tadpoles develop in streams and under rocks. These frogs lack a tympanum (eardrum) and vocal sac. They're nocturnal. They are sometimes called 'archaic frogs'.
