Definition
Littorina is a genus of small sea snails within the family Littorinidae, commonly known as periwinkles. These snails are adapted to life in the intertidal zone, where they experience fluctuating conditions of salinity and air exposure. They graze on algae and are an important part of the intertidal food web. Think of them as the tiny janitors of the rocky shore. They help keep the rocks clean and healthy.
