Definition
Lovastatin is a medication used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It belongs to a class of drugs called statins. It helps prevent heart disease and stroke by reducing the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing good cholesterol (HDL). Unlike dietary changes alone, lovastatin provides a more direct impact on cholesterol production. It works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol. It's typically prescribed when lifestyle changes are insufficient.
