Definition
Makin is an atoll in the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati), located in the central Pacific Ocean. During World War II, it was the site of the Battle of Makin, fought between US and Japanese forces. Though smaller than Tarawa, it was still a strategically important location. Think of a small, remote island becoming a key point in a major conflict. Makin is less famous than Tarawa but was still significant. It was an important step in the US campaign in the Pacific.
