Definition
A maquiladora is a factory in Mexico run by a foreign company and exporting its products to the company's country. These factories often take advantage of lower labor costs and favorable trade agreements. This allows companies to produce goods more cheaply than they could in their home countries. Maquiladoras are typically located near the US-Mexico border. Think of them as a global supply chain in action, where different parts of the production process occur in different countries to maximize efficiency and profit. While they bring jobs and economic activity to Mexico, they also face criticism for labor conditions and environmental concerns.
