Definition
A maquisard was a member of a French rural guerrilla group during World War II. They were resistance fighters who hid in the "maquis," or scrubland, of France. Think of them as the rebels in Star Wars, but instead of spaceships, they used the French countryside as their weapon. They disrupted German operations and aided the Allied forces. Their bravery helped liberate France. They are like the unsung heroes of the Resistance.
