Definition
A matriarchate (less common than matriarchy) would refer to the office or jurisdiction of a female leader, or matriarch, in a society, similar to how a patriarchate functions. However, this term is mostly theoretical, as such official positions rarely exist in recorded history. Think of it as the female equivalent of a 'patriarchate,' but largely hypothetical. Unlike a matriarchy (a society), this refers to a specific role or office. It represents a concept more than a widespread reality.
